Bjorn Dunkerbeck makes it official and signs with Starboard at Sylt

The anticipation is finally over, after a few weeks waiting and wondering the decision has been made. Bjorn has chosen to sign with Starboard for his future career in windsurfing. As many of you will have seen in the last couple of events, Bjorn has been riding the Starboard iSonics. He has proven to be extremely fast with these boards and is really attacking the number one spot on the podium again.Bjorn has won at Sylt, and finished second overall in the Slalom World Championship. Svein Rasmussen flew over to Sylt to check out the action and personally welcome Bjorn to the team. To have such an iconic member of the windsurfing world on the team is truly amazing. We are really excited to see what the future brings with a Starboard and Dunkerbeck collaboration   here for more

Micah Buzianis :  Hello All from lovely Sylt, Yes I am in Sylt and no I am not competing. It was close but with less than a week to go till the start of Sylt my leg was not healed enough for the docs to give me the go ahead to push it on the race course. I have been doing lots of rehab and the mobility is getting much better but is just not quite there yet. My bone feels great no pain or funny feelings just not grown quite enough yet. The main thing the docs and Scott say is that my perenial muscles are very weak from not being mobile for so long as well as not having any weight bearing, but with the last two and a half weeks of training that I have been doing they are getting better and better every day. I still walk with a bit of a limp but this is also getting better daily. here for more

Race 1 finish today :   1-moussilmani s,  2-dagan,  3-dunkerbeck,  4- williams r,  5- maynard,  6- mcgain    race 2 is underway  Dunkerbeck  with solid performance  today with  two bullets on the elimination heads, as well  as Mcgain  with an impressive performance that shows experience on the course.   Albeau fail to advance after fell on the first elimination, however he will be back really strong. -------The long wait is almost over, as the athletes of the PWA World Tour sign up for the forthcoming nine days of Super Grand Slam action. With a whole day set aside for registration, rigging and general preparation, it’s been a fairly relaxed opening day for the sailors and spectators alike. However, the casual ambiance is to be short lived, as the event swings into full-on competition mode tomorrow. A promising forecast combined with the huge weekend crowds, means proceedings are to set to start with a bang.   Shocks and Surprises

The first shock to proceedings is the news that German freestyler, Normen Gunzlein (JP, NeilPryde) has suffered an unfortunate injury while training in the Baltic Sea. Gunzlein, who came seventh in the last freestyle event in Fuerteventura, is reported to have broken his jaw after a collision with another sailor. The injury requires Gunzlein to have an operation before he’ll be fit to windsurf again; we wish him the best of luck with his recovery.  On a more positive note, top slalom racer Micah Buzianis (JP, NeilPryde, MFC) is making a solid recovery after breaking his leg racing in Fuerteventura. Buzianis will be back on his board and training for the 2009 season in the near future. In the meantime, he’s made the surprise decision to come to Sylt and share his wealth of windsurf knowledge with the crowds, as he takes up the roll of assistant event commentator  here for more

Why should you participate at local windsurfing races?

By Sergio K. 'reluctant racer' .   I'm not very competitive, don't do well under pressure and get a bit claustrophobic when someone sails too close to me, so I ask myself why I always participate in local windsurfing races. My initial motivation is just be a part of the community and support my sport, it takes a lot of effort to pull off a racing event, and the least I could do is sign up for it. Here're some of what I've learned over many years of participating at the local regattas here for more

Rethink, Renew, Revitalize         Welcome to the new US Windsurfing!

Hi!  It might have been a while since you heard from us - but your new executive director and the board members have been busy behind the scenes revitalizing US Windsurfing.  Scotia Bauer took over as Executive Director in early 2008 and has been hard at work getting the membership database up to date, straightening out mixed up sail numbers and taking care of member concerns.  Our first step toward improved communication is this e-mail newsletter - we do have a print newsletter in the works for the end of the year (that is being sponsored by Worldwinds Windsurfing, Aerotech Sails, Adventure Sports, Larson's Ski & Sport, Isthmus Sailboards, Big Winds and DaKine), but we didn't want to wait until then to let you all know what we've been up to.  Let us know if you have news, stories or pictures you would like to see in a future newsletter (print or e-mail) - you can send submissions to Executive Director Scotia Bauer at info@uswindsurfing.org or Secretary Karen Marriott at karen@larsonsport.com.  You can check out the US Windsurfing web site to see contact information for all of the members of the Board of Directors and US Windsurfing officers.  We hope you like what you see here, and if your membership in US Windsurfing is not current we hope you will renew and join with us to make US Windsurfing an organization that you are proud to a part of.

TEST , TRAINING AND PREPARATION  FOR SYLT      by:   Gonzalo Costa-hoevel

Test report  for  EXOCET  2009 SLALOM   71 , 66    .  Well it all starts on the beach , when you pull those black beasts out of the car , you do get a few people to turn there head and come to take a look. Even do the weather was not all that great with cloudy skys and rain from time to time.  Unfortunate the winds were light but  for sure the lowend of the boards got tested. Ben started on the old warp slalom 80 with a 9.0 and Gonzalo started on a 7.8 with the 71 WarpSL.  It was amazing to see how fast Gonz got on the plane with that gear .

The fin in the WarpSL 71 was not the best fin but just one ben had lieing around so its good to see it already proforms that good with not the right fin . After going around a few boiys  the diffirence started to become clear that the acceleration of the WarpSL71 was a lot better  then even the Warpslalom 80 in the light light wind that was between 8 to 13 knots , at top speed in this light wind there was not a big diffirence. But with every gust you could see the the black machine accelerate better .“its unreal how easy these boards are sailing , its almost to easy “         Atfter that test gonz jumped on the 66 en Ben on the 71 both on 7.8 sails  but the wind was al little to light to test properly but fur sure they both get going very early .Here are a few coments from Ben and Gonz on the boards : Warp SL66 “this board is a Machine , it planes F*****g quik , When I went I almost couln’t stop”  Warp SL66 and 71“gybing is a joy even in the chop wich you don’t feel and the coming out is the best part when you just glide and never stop.”  Warp SL66 and 71 “its unreal how easy these boards are sailing , its almost to easy “

FORMULA ONE DESIGN (FOD) ready for London 2012  ??

Formula Windsurfing One Design (FOD) Class which will hopefully be selected in November 2008 by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) as the windsurfing equipment to be used at the London 2012 Olympics. As the Athlete’s Representative selected on the steering committee, Allison spent most of her time promoting, reporting, racing and helping ten Starboard sponsored sailors to set up and test the FOD equipment during the event.

The equipment is a proven perfect One Design class for the Olympics being competitive in the open Formula fleets in six events held this year including the World Championships where racing was held in all conditions ranging from 6 to 30 knots. While up against rivals with the most advanced Formula racing equipment, Allison was able to show that Formula One Design can be competitive in the open professional Formula fleet, so in that regard “my mission here has been a success and the Formula One Design has proven it’s worth for consideration as the best and most exciting racing equipment for the London 2012 Olympics.”  here for more

Portimao Formula World Championships '08     by :  Gonzalo Costa-Hoevel  ARG-3

After finishing the event it took me almost a week to write or think something about it. I had a sour feeling all this days but i guess being 2nd in the world can't be that bad..!!!

Preparation for the Worlds:

After Leba Europeans, I had decided that i needed new fins, new trim sails and change my style a little bit. I went back to cold Argentina after Turkeys PWA to reload some energy and "stamina". After couple of weeks of girlfriend, family and good food i took off to Virginia, USA, to see Dave Kashy. I spent three days there testing. We had one good day and then we had to hunt for the wind the other days but those 6hs we spent at the beach THAT day was more than enough to understand what i needed on my new boards. After that key trip at Dave's place i left to Portugal. My plan was to get there at least 5 to 6 days before first day of racing. My light wind setup to middle winds was almost ready after leaving USA. So my mainly concern was high winds. here for more

Windsurfing definitely has not been canceled!            by Rick Randall

Miami Windsurfing.com made the trip up to Orlando to check on the state of the industry, and see the new gear that will be appearing in your local shops soon.  We chatted with the big names in the industry about the equipment, but also about their vision of the health of the sport, and the future as they see it.  You will see the interviews in full as time goes on, but the overall view from everyone is that windsurfing is still going strong and will grow more in the future.  The positive statements from the designers and distributors along with the stoke of the dealers present was a clear sign that they are not planning on giving in to any negativity that has crept up in the media in the last few years.  The one clear and recurring theme was the concept of designing, marketing and selling products designed to work in real world windsurfing conditions, as well as for the high wind spots of the world.  Everyone had a different take on what was best, from the Kona crew to the Formula fanatics, to the visible everywhere SUPporters.  Also, it was exciting to hear that there is some real growth in the youth movement with some real advances happening on the training front. here for more

FORMULA WORLDS 2008 ,  Portugal    ( 85 men, 15 women)               sept 8-14, 2008

Natalia Luczynska POL 45 :              # 3 -------Another two days of Worlds Championships past......Yesterday we had thought we gonna have strong wind from early morning hours and everybody was prepared for that but when we got to the beach at 10 am for skippers meeting there was a lot of clouds and no wind at all. We waited till like 3 pm wind shifted and came strong right away. I was on my 9.0 and most of the guys were on 9.8. We had 4 races in very strong and shifty wind. A lot of things was happening which where unpredictable and uncontoreld - on mens fleet there was couple big crashes. One of them was with Alberto ITA 1 being a real person "bowling ball" on Ross and Jesper. When they actualy menaged to get up everybody was already far so they got back to the shore. That crash ended up with prostest and redress for Alberto and Jesper DEN 111. Besides that wind punished a lot of people and equipment that day. Whole day was hard and exiting specialy for Wojtek POL 10 who won all 4 races but on the last one he got OCS so that winning didn't count ;). Very close to him sailed Michal Polanowski POL 16 who finished twice on 2 place and right next to them was Gonzalo and Ross. At the end of this day Wojtek was 1st Gonzalo 2nd Ross 4th Michal 3rd and Pawel Hlavaty 5th. In woman fleet Allison AUS 911 got 3 bullets being the fastest one on the course before Marta POL 111 who was 2nd two times and one time 4th (discard). Olga UKR 9 stayed on 3rd place. I menaged to be once 5th taking over 3 girls just on the way to finish. Other races were very hard (wind gusts up to 27 kn) and I finished two times 11th and once 12.

Today was strange wind. It was very strong from the morning but totaly ofshore and extremly gusty - from 4 to 25 knots. We had to wait till it's gonna be more stable. Flag for mens fleet went up around 4. From the shore it didn't look so well. It was still very gusty and shifty. First race won Gonzalo. In woman fleet Allison just before the procedure broke her mast and we had to strugle with holes of 3 knots that we couldn't plain at all, gusts that boards were flying to the sky and shifts of wind that everything could happened. That's how Agniszka POL 19 on her last straight got gust taking her exactly to the finish line before Marta and Olga. Because nobody was happy about racing in such conditions, the jury put us on hold again. Suddenly wind changed the direction on side shore and pick up. We got information from the starting boat that it's between 17-20 knots. Some guys took 11 m sails and some took the smallest they had which was better idea cuz actualy wind was around 25-28 knots. Couple guys like Arnon ISR 1 got punished on a starting line and got back to the shore. That race won Wojtek again keeping behind Gonalo, Jesper who unfortunatly had OCS and Michal who cuz of that had 3rd place. In woman fleet Allison won seckond was Sarah Hebert ARM 1 and Marta 3rd. After 10 races Allison and Marta have exaclty the same amount of points third is Olga, 4th Sarah, 5th Agnieszka and 6th Verena. I’m on 12 place but fighting hard it’s really not easy ;) In mens fleet Wojtek is leading with 5 points of difference before Gonzalo whose 2nd and on the 3rd place Michal. These two days were hard and tireing and full of adrenalin for everybody. For the weekend we don't have good forecast but everything can happend over here :)... staty tuned for more reports :) and cross your finger for more wind in those last two days...

# 2   -------------------------  The event here in Portugal is well orgenised, from yesterday we had done 5 races from mens fleet and 4 from womans. Yesterday first day wind picked up around 4 pm and it was very light - around 10 knots. First raced woman two races back-to-back. Both of them won Marta Hlavaty POL 111. When guys went on the water around 6 it was already 13knots but very gusty. After two general recalls finaly there was clear start. During the race it was big fight between the guys who gonna catch better wind shift and strnger gust but first at the finish was Gonzalo Costa Hevel ARG 3. Today we had another 4 races of men fleet and just 2 of woman. Wind came late again around 3 and first start was couple minutes before 4pm in 15 kn. First two races Wojtek Brzozowski POL 10 was unbeatable in front of Gonzalo and Ross Williams GBR 83. Then wind picked up some more - 20kn. Woman fleet also had two races with Marta wining first and Allison Shreeve AUS 911 seckond. For Ladies that was it for a day. Guys had another two to go. Wind was still strong and Wojtek didn't let go. He won 4th race keeping Gonzalo and Alberto Benegatti ITA 1 just behind him. Last race of a day won Gonzalo Ross was seckond and Jesper Vesterstorm DEN 111 third. After 5 races of mens fleet Gonzalo is leading with 6points, Wojtek is seckond with 7 points then Ross, Michal Polanowski POL 16 is forth and Alberto fifth. In woman fleet Marta is first, Allison seckond, Olga Maslivets UKR 9 is third, Agnieszka Pietrasik POL 19 forth and Verena Fauster ITA 31 fifth. Tomorrow we expact strong wind all day so I think we will have another good day of racing. Stay tuned :)

#1    ------PORTIMAO Formula World Championships time to begin! Registration day went pretty well. For now we have around 80 Men and 15 Woman on starting  list. Most of the guys are already here since couple days, testing  everything before the most important Formula event this year. Jury expect to have around 100 man so tomorrow still half of a day is for late coming competitors and then at 1.30 first skippers meeting. SO stay  tuned for more to come :)

Steve Bobner  :  This World Championship should be something special as the new Formula One Design will be racing with the Formula fleet. 10 kits were provided for Olympic class sailors to use and they have been out there paring and tuning their kits. They general feeling is that the board and fins are decent but the rig still needs work. Nonetheless, the new Formula one design class will have some interesting racing this week with the organization trying out some new formats with a possible metal race at the end of each day??!!   here for more

Interview with America’s greatest:                Micah Buzianis   USA-34

What do you think of the current state of the PWA racing scene?  Is only having slalom a good thing, or would adding Formula course racing be a positive thing?

I really think that the way the PWA racing program is today is a very positive direction for racers and the sport as a whole.  I think that the general infrastructure and personnel could use some small improvements in areas(what and who can't use some improvements though) but as a whole it is by far the best set up and best run system for professional windsurfers there is. I am not sure if having only slalom is the best thing or not??  I know that Formula is still a very big part of windsurf racing world wide and is making another come back in numbers.  I would really like to see the Formula tours and the PWA come together and at least work more closely on growing windsurf racing.  Maybe this would involve brining   here for more

LABOR DAY   at Homestead    by:    Sergio Kapul

With tropical storm Hanna in the gulf giving us a temporary relieve from the light summer winds, few of us regular Causeway windsurfers decided on a trip to Biscayne National Park (Homestead) Labor Day Monday. The drive was extra ½ hour coming from the North of Miami, There’re 2 parking areas, one with the boat ramps ($5 per car) and the other one free to the left and used by windsurfers. The area is large, clean and picturesque, with plenty of parking and picnicking areas. The excess to the water to is small, one windsurfer at a time J but once you’re out, and it’s great for flat water blasting!  here for more

To Z or not to Z?       That is Z question.     By:  Steve Bodner

The Zed' I am referring to is the 2nd Formula board F2 registered in the beginning of 2008 when the class rules where frozen- to limit the board manufacturers cycle to every 2 years instead of every year. F2 made and registered 2 boards for the 2 year cyle. The catch was F2 released their first board early in the year while the Z just appeared before the Europeans in August. Until the last day at the Euros, Denis Little- the lone sailor on Z was untouchable. Its light air performance was phenomenal!
But...yes there's always a but. The thing that makes this board so good in the light air might give up that advantage when the breeze is up. Think
Chubacabra- the code zero light air jib the US Tornado team registered in the Olympics that failed to perform in anything over 12k. The increased tail width of the board requires an insanely powerful fin. At the Euros., Denis was using a cut down 83 cm fin to basically walk away from the fleet- that was until the breeze came up and the board had more control issues.

Call it part marketing hype, part obsession of an development class sailor!
I have never been the fastest sailor in the light breeze. Hell its my weakest link in the chain at the moment but the beauty of an open development class like the formula class, lets sailors pick and choose form a variety of equipment. Some more available than others. If you can get a hold if it, use it!
With the Worlds just over a week away, I have to register 1 board for the regatta. I will take 2 and continue to test the board with all my fins to see if the advantage is worthwhile. Otherwise I will register my 2008 F2 board that Ive been sailing all season- its light air performance, not terribly impressive but a good overall board that performs well in the light, medium and big breeze. My most impressive result so far has been in the breeze at the last day of the Euros.
The board was made available to a handful of sailors in the
Netherlands going to the Worlds. I was able to get a hold of one earlier this week and sail in in the first day of the Belgium Formula Championships on Saturday.
The outcome so far was impressive. Better angle than Ive had all season once I found the right fin. The light wind IFJU was going well in the 3rd race of the day where I finished 3rd behind Denis and Dirk. The first 2 races, I used the CRAD fin with decent results but it felt like I was not getting than most angle out of the board. In my past experience, the IFJU fin became easily overpowered once the chop built significantly.

A vacation closer to home……                      By Rick Randall

Labor Day is the holiday that signals the end of the summer.  For most folks in the world, summer is the time to go to the beach, or head out of town with the family.  For many windsurfers, especially here in Florida, summer is the time to do just about anything except hit the beach, as the wind usually is not around much at all.  Many seize the opportunity to head thousands of miles away to explore the wind possibilities in the Gorge, or somewhere in the
